Sequoia is a research project for the digital capture of a Sequoia tree growing in New Forest National Park.

The sequoia is captured as pointcloud information using a LIDAR terrestrial laser scanner. The data is then visualised through digitally rendered images. The tree's intention was for the 'We Live in an Ocean of Air' virtual reality experience by Marshmallow Laser Feast in collaboration with Natan Sinigaglia and Mileece l'Anson at the Saatchi Gallery, London (7th Dec 2018 - 5th May 2019).

I haven't visited the New Forest since, but it's an interesting feeling to have the tree here at all times. Scanning is an intimate activity because you spend a lot of time in close proximity of something with the intent to capture it holistically. I still remember the crunch of the floor and the squish of the tree's spongy bark.
